The spokesman of the Labour Party (LP), Yunusa Tanko, has refuted claims that the party is part of any insurrection plan to scuttle Nigeria’s democratic process and install an interim government. Tanko made this known in a statement released on Thursday, in response to the Department of State Services’ (DSS) warning of a plot to disrupt Nigeria’s democratic process.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the DSS had raised an alarm over an alleged plot to scuttle the democratic process and install an interim government. The agency’s spokesman, Peter Afunanya, stated that the secret police had identified some key players in the plan.
Reacting to the development, Tanko said that the Labour Party is not plotting any insurrection and described the allegations as a conspiracy against the state. He added that the party would protect the interest of the Nigerian people in accordance with the law, which allows for peaceful protests with the defense and protection of the Nigerian security apparatus.
“Let me make it clear that the Labour Party is not part of any plot to scuttle the democratic process in Nigeria. We see this as a conspiracy against the state and the Nigerian people. We would protect the interest of Nigerian people based on the provisions of the law which provides that where you are hurting, you have the right to protest and that you would do so with the defence and protection of the Nigerian security apparatus. That is what we would do, but we would not support any insurrection in any way,” Tanko said.
Tanko also urged the DSS to reveal the identities of the key players in the alleged plot and bring them to justice, while calling on the security agencies to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to forestall any attempt to disrupt Nigeria’s democratic process.
