President Muhammadu Buhari

The federal government has directed secondary schools in the country to reopen this August.

The information was made known by the Ministry of Education on July 21, 2020, in a press statement shared via its Twitter handle.

It was revealed by the ministry that the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will commence on August 17, 2020.

In light of the above, secondary schools have been told to resume as from August 4, 2020, for exit classes only.

The decision was reached at a virtual consultative meeting among the major stockholders in the education sector.

Ben Bem Goong, Director, Press and Public Relations of the ministry, stated:

It was agreed that the exit classes should resume immediately after the Sallah break, from the 4th of August 2020 to enable them prepare for the WAEC examinations scheduled to commence from the 17th of August, 2020.”

He added:

Another meeting is to be convened tomorrow between the Federal Ministry of Education and Chief Executives of examination bodies namely NECO, NABTEB, and NBAIS to harmonize their examination dates.”
