Medical Team Awaits Permission to Treat IPOB Leader Nnamdi Kanu in Abuja

Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, is set to receive urgent medical attention as his family confirmed the arrival of his medical team in Abuja. The team, recommended by the Department of State Services (DSS) medical unit, has arrived to carry out an emergency ear surgery for Kanu, according to Prince Emmanuel Kanu, his younger brother.

In an exclusive interview with Vanguard, Prince Emmanuel Kanu revealed that the medical team is currently awaiting permission from the DSS to access the IPOB leader and conduct a thorough examination. The secret police’s medical unit had recently recommended the immediate surgery due to the seriousness of Kanu’s ear condition.

Since his alleged “abduction in Kenya” and subsequent extraordinary rendition to Nigeria in June 2021, Kanu has remained in solitary confinement at the DSS headquarters in Abuja. Despite multiple court judgments and the United Nations’ opinion calling for his unconditional release and compensation, the Federal Government has yet to set him free.

Eminent Nigerians and various groups have been fervently advocating for Kanu’s release, emphasizing that his continued illegal detention contributes to the disturbing insecurity prevalent in the South East geo-political zone. The public sentiment aligns with the belief that resolving the issue surrounding Kanu’s detention is crucial in addressing the region’s security challenges.

The prolonged detention of the IPOB leader has sparked nationwide debates, with human rights organizations and activists condemning the government’s handling of the case. The arrival of the medical team signifies a potential development in Kanu’s situation and has raised hopes among his supporters and well-wishers that his health concerns will be addressed promptly.

As Nigerians eagerly await further updates on Kanu’s condition and the impending surgery, the call for his release continues to resonate across the country. The outcome of these events will undoubtedly shape the discourse surrounding the rule of law and human rights in Nigeria.
