The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has assured the public that the 2023 general elections will take place as planned despite recent challenges posed by fuel and cash shortages.

He addressed state house correspondents after briefing the Federal Executive Council and stated that the Commission has addressed the difficulties caused by the scarcities.

There were worries among stakeholders about INEC’s ability to conduct the elections due to the current distribution of fuel and the redesigned currency notes. However, Yakubu explained that he held a meeting with the President Muhammadu Buhari and the Federal Executive Council to update them on INEC’s preparations for the election and to discuss the challenges faced.

He revealed that INEC had already found solutions to the two main issues of concern, which were the availability of fuel and currency. He said that the Commission had a meeting with the National Union of Road Transport Workers to address the issue of fuel and that a technical committee has been set up to ensure that the Commission has access to over 900 petrol stations nationwide. He added that the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria had also assured INEC that it will not face any difficulties with currency.

Yakubu confirmed that the national election will take place on February 25th and the state election on March 11th as scheduled.
