Man Arrested in Lagos for Possession of Police Uniform
Lagos, Nigeria – In a recent development, the Lagos State Police Command has announced the arrest of Issa Majafara, an individual found in possession of a police uniform. The news was confirmed by SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police Public Relations Officer for the command, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday.
According to Hundeyin, the suspect, who had no fixed address, was apprehended on Tuesday at approximately 6:30 p.m. by a team of vigilant officers on a surveillance patrol along Iyana-Iba Market Road in the Ojo area of Lagos. Upon his arrest, the suspect was discovered to be in possession of various police attire, including two pairs of trousers, a camouflage T-shirt, and a police face cap.
“The suspect claimed during interrogation that he found the uniform in a dustbin,” revealed Hundeyin. However, the case remains under investigation, and the suspect is expected to be arraigned in court soon to face charges of impersonation.
As a precautionary measure, the police spokesperson issued a warning to the general public, urging them to remain cautious of suspected criminals who may attempt to impersonate law enforcement or security personnel by wearing official uniforms. Hundeyin encouraged residents to promptly report any individuals they suspect of impersonating police officers or any other security personnel to the nearest police station or the closest patrol team.
To help distinguish between genuine officers and imposters, Hundeyin emphasized that authentic law enforcement personnel have their names clearly printed on their uniforms. This serves as a crucial identification feature for members of the public to verify the legitimacy of any individual claiming to be a police officer.
In light of this recent arrest, the Lagos State Police Command aims to maintain the safety and security of the community by actively apprehending and prosecuting those involved in criminal activities, particularly those attempting to deceive the public by impersonating law enforcement officials.
