Imo State’s Labour Party leadership has demanded the immediate removal of Resident Electoral Commissioner Prof. Sylvia Agu, as well as Electoral Officers (EOs) and Supervisory Presiding Officers (SPOs) in the state, due to widespread irregularities in the Presidential and National Assembly elections.
At a press conference held at the LP’s Imo State headquarters on Monday, state party chairman Dr. Ambrose Onyekwere stated that if the House of Assembly elections on March 11, 2023, were conducted by the current REC, all the results would be rejected in advance.
The state chairman accused INEC of deliberately and systematically disenfranchising Imo State citizens, citing late arrival of voting materials, non-conduct of election at many polling units, and absence of INEC staff at polling units. According to Onyekwere, INEC staff in many polling units refused to transmit results, citing excuses like “No Code” and BVAS machine malfunctions.
The LP also observed that INEC staff arrived at polling units with insufficient materials, including not more than 25 ballot papers for each of the three positions being contested. The state party chairman further pointed out manipulation and tampering of BVAS machines and non-compliance with INEC’s directive to conduct elections on February 26, 2023, at polling units where elections did not take place the previous day.
