High Court Orders Immediate Release of Former CBN Governor Emefiele
Emefiele Granted Unconditional Release by High Court

Justice O. Adeniji, presiding over the High Court in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, issued an order on Thursday for the immediate and unconditional release of the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The judge’s directive came in response to an ex parte motion presented by Emefiele’s legal team. The case, identified as FCT/HC/CV/040/2023/M/122/2023, lists the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Attorney General of the Federation, the EFCC, and its chairman, Ola Olukoyede, as defendants.

Justice Adeniji’s ruling stated, “The third and fourth respondents are hereby ordered to immediately release the applicant from detention without conditions, or alternatively, produce him in court on the scheduled date for the hearing of the substantive motion on notice, for the purpose of the court considering his bail application.”

Furthermore, the court ordered that the motion on notice be heard on November 11, 2023. Both the current order and the Motion on Notice are to be served on the respondents on Thursday, November 2, 2023.

It is worth noting that Emefiele had been detained by the EFCC on October 27, shortly after his release from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), where he had been held since June 10. The DSS had taken him into custody in June, following his suspension by President Bola Tinubu.
