Former Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has vehemently denied allegations of a N4 billion fraud investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). In a statement released on Friday by Mallam Ahmad Sajoh, the Head of the Fayemi Media Office in Abuja, it was clarified that during Fayemi’s visit to the EFCC, no such accusation was brought up during his discussions with the agency’s officials.
The statement further revealed that Fayemi’s interaction with the EFCC officials in Ilorin, Kwara State, was solely in response to an unsubstantiated petition submitted by a group aiming to tarnish his reputation and public image.
“We would like to address the concerns surrounding the invitation and subsequent visit of Dr. Kayode Fayemi, the immediate past governor of Ekiti State and former Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, to the Ilorin Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,” the statement read.
It continued, “Last month, Dr. Fayemi received an invitation from the Ilorin office of the EFCC regarding a money laundering petition against him. This occurred during a period of intense preparations for the change of government, with numerous activities and programs scheduled as part of the transition.”
Given his pivotal role in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his commitments to important events during this period, his absence would have had a significant impact. Recognizing the importance of fulfilling his commitments at that time, Fayemi duly informed the EFCC of his willingness to cooperate but requested a more suitable date for his appearance.
“We firmly believe that Dr. Fayemi’s visit has adequately addressed the agency’s inquiries related to the petition. However, should further clarification be necessary, Dr. Fayemi is fully prepared to cooperate,” the statement affirmed.
It also emphasized that contrary to circulating reports of an alleged N4 billion fraud case against Fayemi, no such accusation was made during his conversation with the EFCC. Instead, he merely addressed a baseless petition from an anonymous group known as the Ekiti Patriotic Coalition, which the statement claimed was a front for anti-Fayemi politicians seeking to besmirch the former governor’s reputation.
During his tenure as governor, Fayemi consistently demonstrated a profound commitment to the welfare of the citizens. He spearheaded notable advancements in infrastructure development and successfully attracted valuable investment opportunities to the state.
The statement concluded by reiterating Fayemi’s readiness to cooperate with the EFCC, while expressing confidence that the agency’s inquiries will ultimately clear his name of any wrongdoing.
