In a recent interview on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today,’ former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, vehemently responded to critics demanding accountability for his handling of funds during his tenure. Fayose, visibly infuriated by the questions, dared his detractors to take legal action against him while asserting that his wealth was amassed outside of politics.
When confronted about the possibility of disclosing details regarding the administration of state funds during his governorship, Fayose dismissed the inquiry as “meaningless.” He boldly declared, “They have charged me to court; anybody that is not satisfied should also take me to court. How can I be explaining how I spent Ekiti money? I was one governor that never borrowed a dime. Ekiti people cannot forget me for the good works I did.”
Fayose, known as a prominent figure in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), currently faces charges of alleged fraud amounting to N6.9 billion. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) re-arraigned Fayose and his company, Spotless Investment Limited, on July 2, 2019. The charges against them pertain to 11 counts of money laundering and stealing.
The defendants initially appeared before Justice Mojisola Olatoregun on October 22, 2018. The trial has been adjourned several times since then, with the most recent adjournment scheduled for May 8 and 9, as well as June 6 and 8, 2023.
Fayose’s bold remarks have sparked further controversy, drawing attention to the ongoing legal battle surrounding his alleged financial improprieties. As the case progresses, many await the outcome with anticipation, eager to see if justice will be served and accountability upheld.
