Manchester City players celebrate Kevin de Bruyne’s goal against Atletico Madrid

It was a busy Tuesday night as Europe’s biggest competition took centre stage- the UEFA Champions League. Manchester City played host to Atletico Madrid whilst Liverpool were away at Benfica.

Manchester City started the game brightly and created a good amount of chances but at the end of the first 45 minutes,it was still level at 0-0. Atletico Madrid were defending resolutely as City kept taking the game to them. City coach Pep Guardiola made a couple of changes which proved worthwhile.

In the 70th minute,Manchester City broke the deadlock when substitute Phil Foden wriggled away from three Atletico defenders to set up Kevin de Bruyne who made a brilliant run before slotting in an ice cold finish. City go to the Wanda Metropolitano next week with a 1-0 advantage.

Elsewhere, Liverpool were victorious in Portugal as Benfica were beaten 1-3 at the Estadio da Luz. Goals from Sadio Mané and Luis Diaz were enough to clinch an away victory for the Reds. In form striker Darwin Nunez was on the score sheet for the home side but it could be a glimmer of hope for the Portuguese club as they hunt for a semi-final place.

Tomorrow’s fixtures see defending champions Chelsea host Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge. Bayern Munich travel to Eastern Spain where they take on the Yellow Submarines of Villarreal.
