Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from the ATX Open due to tonsillitis, preventing her from playing her first match since losing to Coco Gauff in the Australian Open in January.

The 20-year-old had committed to play in the inaugural WTA Tour Tournament, which will start on Monday at the Westwood Country Club in Texas.

Raducanu expressed her apologies for having to withdraw, citing her current suffering from tonsillitis. The event, which features a 16-team doubles field, will be the first tournament held in the United States during the WTA’s 50th anniversary season.

Raducanu has faced several setbacks, including injuries and poor form, since her historic win at Flushing Meadows. She had taken a short break from tournament tennis ahead of the French Open and had been hopeful of being back to full fitness this year after working on her fitness and conditioning during the off-season. Monica Puig, a former Olympic champion, believes that it’s essential for Raducanu to have an established and settled team to set her future goals and alleviate the pressure of expectations.
