Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen has reiterated his backing for striker Victor Boniface, despite the forward’s continued difficulties translating his club-level success to international duty. Eguavoen’s comments came in the wake of Nigeria’s unexpected 2-1 defeat to Rwanda on Monday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Reflecting on Boniface’s inconsistent form with the national team, Eguavoen acknowledged that the forward’s performances have fallen short of expectations. “Yes, good question. Boniface is capable of great things, especially in his club. When he comes here, we try to give him a lot of confidence and playing time,” Eguavoen told reporters.

Despite the loss to Rwanda, Nigeria’s spot at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco had already been secured, with the team finishing first in Group D with 11 points. However, the defeat and Boniface’s struggles have sparked discussions among fans and analysts alike.

Eguavoen emphasized his belief in Boniface’s potential and noted that efforts have been made to help the player acclimate to the national setup. “I’m somebody who wants to give players confidence. I’ve done enough, but for whatever reason, he’s still not clicking with the team,” he said, adding that he has held numerous one-on-one conversations with Boniface to boost his self-belief and performance.

The striker’s inability to replicate his goal-scoring prowess has drawn scrutiny, especially in comparison to Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen, who has a strong connection with fans due to his consistent form and passion on the pitch.

When asked if Boniface would continue to feature in upcoming international fixtures, Eguavoen affirmed his commitment to the player. “He’s still part of the squad. He will remain part of the squad,” the coach stated, underlining his intent to provide Boniface with further opportunities to find his form and contribute to the team’s success.
