EFCC Denies Declaring Ex-Zamfara Gov, Bello Matawalle, Wanted Amid Alleged N70b Fraud
Inaccurate Report: EFCC Clarifies Non-Involvement in Ex-Zamfara Gov’s Arrest

In response to a recent newspaper report titled “Alleged N70b Fraud: EFCC Declares Ex-Zamfara Gov, Matawalle Wanted,” the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has categorically denied declaring the former governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle, wanted. The report, which surfaced in a daily newspaper on June 18, 2023, falsely claimed that the EFCC had requested the Department of State Service (DSS) to arrest Matawalle “anywhere he is seen.”

The EFCC swiftly refuted the allegations, stating that it has not officially declared Bello Matawalle wanted, nor has it sought the assistance of any agency, including the DSS, to apprehend him. Emphasizing their commitment to due process, the Commission explained that they follow a standard procedure when declaring individuals wanted and communicating such information to the public. The EFCC further criticized the reliance on anonymous “security sources” in the aforementioned report.

While refraining from passing judgment on the former governor’s case, the EFCC reiterated that the report was inaccurate and lacked factual basis. The Commission maintains its dedication to conducting thorough investigations and ensuring fair treatment of all individuals involved in alleged financial crimes.

The allegations of a N70 billion fraud involving Bello Matawalle remain under investigation, and the EFCC assures the public that any developments in the case will be communicated through official channels. The Commission has encouraged the media and the general public to rely on verified information from credible sources to avoid spreading misleading reports.

As the matter unfolds, the EFCC remains committed to upholding the rule of law and carrying out its mandate to combat financial crimes in Nigeria.
