In an awe-inspiring display of sportsmanship and family bonds, former Super Eagles goalkeeper Dele Aiyenugba recently shared his profound experience of playing against his own son, Daniel Aiyenugba, in a gripping semifinal match during a preseason tournament held in Ikenne.
The nostalgic encounter took place last Monday, as Dele Aiyenugba guarded the goalposts for Kwara United FC, while his son, Daniel Aiyenugba, showcased his goalkeeping prowess for Beyond Limits Academy of Ogun. As both teams exchanged crests before the match, an emotional Dele Aiyenugba shared his sentiments with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday. He expressed his overwhelming joy at witnessing his son wear the captain’s armband and guard the net with determination, even if it meant being the opposition to his own team. “I was very happy and delighted seeing my son in goal as captain for the team playing against mine,” Aiyenugba said, his voice brimming with pride and emotion.
Dele Aiyenugba’s illustrious career, adorned with 17 caps for the Nigerian national team between 2005 and 2015, has seen him occupy the goalposts for various clubs over the years. Notably, he spent 13 seasons playing in Israel with four different teams before his return to Nigeria ahead of the 2020-21 season. This return marked a new chapter in his career, as he joined Kwara United and became a pivotal asset for the Ilorin-based Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side.
Throughout his journey, Aiyenugba has left an indelible mark on Nigerian football. His trophy-laden cabinet boasts four NPFL titles with Enyimba in 2002, 2003, 2005, and 2007, along with the coveted Federation Cup in 2005. His influence transcended national borders, as he clinched the African Champions League twice with Enyimba in 2003 and 2004, in addition to securing the African Super Cup honors in 2004 and 2005.
Delving into the annals of his early career, Aiyenugba’s association with football began at Kwara Stars between 1998 and 2000, paving the way for his iconic stint with Enyimba from 2001 to 2007.
