Nigerian afrobeats sensation, David Adeleke, widely known as Davido, recently sat down for an exclusive interview with Real 92.3 FM in Atlanta, where he candidly shared his early struggles in the music industry and shed light on his decision to leave his father’s opulent $60 million mansion in Lagos to pursue his passion for music.
Contrary to popular belief that Davido’s affluent background paved an easy path to success, the artist revealed that he faced his fair share of challenges on his journey to becoming a renowned musician.
“People don’t really know about my past, especially the early part of my career. What was difficult for me was coming from a very wealthy background. Everybody just felt like, ‘Nah, his dad… This is money,'” Davido explained.
The talented artist went on to recall the hurdles he encountered as he tirelessly worked to prove himself in the music industry. “I dropped several records before they had to agree like, ‘Okay, he is actually good,'” he reminisced.
Davido acknowledged that people are drawn to stories of triumph over adversity, the classic “rags to riches” narrative. While he may not have experienced extreme poverty, his passion for music drove him to make a daring decision. “We had a $60 million house in Nigeria that I ran away from; I was sleeping in my friend’s studio, hot. They were looking at me crazy like, ‘Bro, you better go home.’ I said, ‘I’m not going home,'” he revealed.
The singer’s determination to pursue his musical dreams led him to leave the comforts of his lavish family home. He believed that returning home would mean being restricted from fully dedicating himself to his craft.
Davido’s account serves as a testament to his unwavering commitment to his passion, despite having the privilege of a prosperous upbringing. The artist’s determination, coupled with his undeniable talent, eventually propelled him to the forefront of the afrobeats genre, where he has achieved remarkable success.
As Davido continues to dominate the music industry with his chart-topping hits and electrifying performances, his story serves as an inspiration to aspiring artists, emphasizing the importance of hard work, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of one’s dreams, regardless of their background or circumstances.
