Not long ago, the kid of Cristiano Ronaldo’s former Real Madrid colleague Marcelo received a unique Christmas present from the famous Portuguese footballer, who is now playing for the Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr. Between 2009 and 2018, Ronaldo and Marcelo played side by side at Santiago Bernabeu. They became close as teammates and shared in many victories, including two La Ligas, four Champions Leagues, and three FIFA Club World Cups.

Marcelo and Ronaldo remain good friends despite the fact that their careers diverged; Ronaldo went on to become Real Madrid’s all-time leading scorer. While Marcelo went back to Brazil to play for the champions of the Copa Libertadores, Fluminense, Ronaldo departed for Juventus of the Serie A.

A signed Al-Nassr shirt was sent to Marcelo’s son in Brazil by Ronaldo in a touching gesture that crossed countries. A young man wrote, “Thank you so much Cris,” to convey his feelings of joy and appreciation on social media. My heart aches for you. My hero, @cristiano.

After leaving Olympiacos of Greece in February 2023, Marcelo’s future was a topic of debate, with some suggesting he could join Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia. Because “We talked about this some time ago,” Marcelo decided to go back to his Brazilian origins. It wasn’t enough that I had plans to leave Al-Nassr; I also felt the desire to get back to my homeland of Brazil. I felt compelled to return for some reason.

An emotional back-and-forth between the two football greats and their families exemplifies how their friendship has endured through thick and thin, across oceans and professions.
