Cresswell and Moyes see Red as Hammers Crash Out of Europa League
A dejected looking David Moyes on the touchline

West Ham will definitely have a night to forget when they remember 5th of May, 2022. It was the second leg of the Europa League semi-final and West Ham was going to have to beat Frankfurt to book a place in the final as they had lost 1-2 at the London Stadium.

West Ham then had the task of playing away from home in Germany to face Frankfurt in the last stand. The game started with West Ham bright on a few occasions and then began piling the pressure on the home side. Unfortunately, Hammers defender Aaron Cresswell saw a red card and was giving his marching orders in the first half. Down to ten men, the tie had certainly turned on its head and Frankfurt began to give West Ham a taste of their own medicine.

A goal was scored by Frankfurt winger Borre and the goal was enough to give the home side a deserved victory and increase the aggregate score to 3-1. The highlight of the game however, would not be on the pitch but on the touchline.

A seething David Moyes also saw red for the most absurd reasons. A Frankfurt ball boy was delaying giving the ball to the team to take a throw. After throwing the ball, the incensed West Ham gaffer fired the ball at the young boy who stood helplessly. The referee then gave the Scotsman his marching orders and that summed up a dismal evening for the East London club.

It must be said that West Ham had a brilliant campaign in the Europa League and to come this far was somewhat unexpected by many pundits and fans alike.  Moyes termed it a “disappointing evening with officiating questionable at times, but a good campaign all round.”

Frankfurt will face Rangers in the final which will be in Seville to see  who wins the cup.
