Constitutional Lawyer Appeals for Mercy for Convicted Ex-Senate President and Wife
Former Deputy Senate President and Wife Seek Mercy from UK Court Conviction

Kayode Ajulo, a constitutional lawyer, has written a letter to King Charles III, requesting a Prerogative of Mercy for Ike Ekweremadu, former Deputy Senate President, and his wife, Beatrice. The couple had been convicted by a British court for violating laws on kidney donation and transplant.

Ajulo’s plea was contained in a letter he wrote to the King and made available to the press in Abuja on Saturday. The couple, alongside their doctor, Obinna Obeta, were sentenced to prison terms of 9 years, 4 years, and 10 years, respectively, by an Old Bailey Court in the UK.

In his letter to the King, Ajulo appealed to the monarch to show mercy to the couple, saying that their case was a sad one that left a bitter taste in the mouth. He explained that the couple’s actions were motivated by a desperate desire to save the life of their daughter Sonia, who was in dire need of a kidney transplant.

Ajulo noted that Ekweremadu may have chosen not to publicly advertise for a kidney donor to avoid swindlers who could take undue advantage of his daughter’s ailment. He, therefore, pleaded with the King to invoke the Royal Prerogative of Mercy in favor of the couple.

The constitutional lawyer said he witnessed the King’s coronation with mixed emotions and was convinced that the monarch’s mercy would bring relief to the couple and their family.

In conclusion, Ajulo appealed to the King to use his good offices to ensure that justice is tempered with mercy in the case of Ekweremadu and his wife.
