China Formally Opens 5G-Enabled Roads For Driverless Vehicles

China has opened a 5G-covered road in the Baohe district of Hefei City in the eastern part of the country for testing self-driving cars.

The 4.4 km road was opened on Thursday, September 3, 2020, and will be open to both self-driving vehicles and cars with drivers.

Construction on the road started in August 2019 and has since achieved 5G coverage, with the installation of road conditions monitoring devices and a cloud platform control center built.

A self-driving car

It was revealed by the construction unit that self-driving cars could realize intelligence on the road and that 5G technology has significantly improved the safety of vehicle operation.

More than a dozen Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen have been approved to conduct road tests for self-driving cars.
