In a major transfer deal, Chelsea Football Club has officially confirmed the acquisition of Spanish goalkeeper Robert Sanchez from Brighton and Hove Albion. The move comes after a prolonged search for a second-choice goalkeeper, following the departure of Edouard Mendy to the Saudi Pro League.
The 25-year-old shot-stopper has signed a lucrative seven-year deal with the West London side, in a transfer worth £25 million. Sanchez’s arrival is expected to strengthen Chelsea’s goalkeeping unit and provide healthy competition for their fellow Spaniard, Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Having begun his football journey with Brighton’s youth team in 2015, Robert Sanchez went on to make an impressive 87 appearances in the Premier League during his tenure with the Seagulls. His consistent performances both at the club level and being capped by his national team make him a promising addition to Chelsea’s squad.
In a statement to the club’s official website, Chelsea’s Co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart expressed their delight at the new signing, highlighting Sanchez’s proven track record in the Premier League and his international experience. They are excited to witness his collaboration with Mauricio and the coaching team during the upcoming season.
Furthermore, reports indicate that Chelsea is still in the running to secure the signature of Brighton’s highly-rated midfielder, Moises Caicedo, for a staggering £100 million. If this deal materializes, it would take the total amount spent by Chelsea on Brighton signings in the last two transfer windows to an astounding £200 million.
Notably, last summer, the club already acquired Marc Cucurella from Brighton, showcasing their growing interest in the Seagulls’ talented players. The addition of Robert Sanchez and a potential move for Moises Caicedo demonstrate Chelsea’s ambition to strengthen their squad for the challenges ahead.
Additionally, the club paid £22 million in compensation to Brighton for their former coach, Graham Potter, and his entire coaching staff team, which includes Bruno Saltor, Kyle Macaulay, Paul Winstanley (who is now part of Chelsea’s sporting directors), Ben Roberts, and Bjorn Hamberg. This payout occurred following the sacking of Thomas Tuchel in September 2022.
