The government of Burundi on Tuesday announced the “unexpected” death of President Pierre Nkurunziza.
The government revealed in a tweeted statement that he died after suffering a cardiac arrest.
He was admitted to hospital on Saturday after feeling unwell, his condition improved but on Monday he had a cardiac arrest and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, officials said.
According to the country’s constitution, the president of the legislature should take control of the government until the inauguration of election winner Évariste Ndayishimiye, set for Aug. 20.
