The inauguration ceremony was held at the Council Chambers of the State House in Abuja on Wednesday, just before the Federal Executive Council meeting.

NCDIE was launched in a bid to promote the development of Nigeria’s digital economy and provide a supportive environment for entrepreneurs to thrive.

The establishment of the council is based on the Nigeria Startup Act, 2022 (NSA, 2022), which was signed into law in December 2022.

The NCDIE, which is chaired by the President, has 13 other members, including the Vice President, the Ministers of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Trade and Investment, Communications, and Digital Economy, and the Governor of the Central Bank, among others.

During the inauguration, President Buhari emphasized the significance of the NCDIE in driving economic growth and job creation, as well as the plans to consolidate the gains recorded in the sector under his administration.

He stated that he expects the NCDIE to oversee the implementation of the Nigeria Startup Act, which aims to stimulate the growth of innovative startups and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the country.

The council is expected to create a supportive environment for startups and SMEs, which will boost job creation, economic growth and development, and the transformation of Nigeria into a digital economy.

The NCDIE will also be responsible for promoting innovation, driving collaboration between the public and private sectors, and ensuring that the digital economy becomes a major contributor to the country’s GDP.
