On Sunday, supporters of Bolsonaro who refused to accept his election defeat stormed Congress, the Supreme Court, and the presidential palace in the country’s capital.

The protest began a week after his leftist rival and former leader, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, was sworn in.

Bolsonaro was defeated in the presidential election in October by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Still, his supporters are protesting the election results, demanding Lula’s resignation and the intervention of the military.

The Protesters stormed the presidential palace, vandalized property, and attacked police vehicles. Police used tear gas on the protesters.

Lula, who is on an official trip to São Paulo state, described the protest as “acts of vandals and fascists”.

“We will find out who funded these vandals who went to Brasilia, and they will all pay with the force of law,” Lula said.

The protest has been compared to a mob attack on the US Capitol Hill building in 2021, in which four people were reported killed.

While the US Congress was sitting to confirm President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, supporters of President Donald Trump breached police lines and stormed the building.

Trump had called on supporters to march to Congress after refusing to concede the election to Biden.

Bolsonaro, who is currently in the United States, is said to have ties with Donald Trump.
