Borussia Dortmund Defeats Chelsea 1-0 in Champions League Round of 16 First Leg

In the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie, Borussia Dortmund secured a 1-0 victory over Chelsea, thanks to Karim Adeyemi’s spectacular breakaway goal. Despite having the better chances throughout the game, Graham Potter’s side failed to capitalize on their opportunities.

The game was played in a boisterous atmosphere in Germany, and Chelsea’s Thiago Silva had a goal disallowed for handball. Joao Felix also missed a golden opportunity, hitting the crossbar when well-placed. Unfortunately for Chelsea, Adeyemi punished their earlier profligacy with a solo run that resulted in a goal just after the hour mark.

Although Chelsea played well and pushed hard for the equalizer after going behind, they were unable to find the back of the net. Kalidou Koulibaly came closest, but his fierce shot was cleared off the line by Emre Can. The defeat on the night means that Chelsea must now come from behind at Stamford Bridge to progress.

Despite their performance, Chelsea has won only one match in nine since the turn of the year. While Potter may have been encouraged by some aspects of the game, this was further evidence that Chelsea is still struggling to seize victory.
