In a remarkable development on the Senate floor, Senate President Godswill Akpabio officially announced the principal officers of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the majority party in the upper legislative chamber.
This announcement, which took place on Tuesday, revealed the key figures who will play pivotal roles in shaping the legislative agenda and operations.
Akpabio commenced the proceedings by declaring Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the distinguished representative of Ekiti Central, as the majority leader.
Additionally, Senator David Umahi, who hails from Ebonyi South, was appointed as the deputy majority leader.
Furthermore, Akpabio named Senator Ali Ndume, the eminent representative of Borno South, as the chief whip of the Senate. Working closely with Ndume, Senator Lola Ashiru, the esteemed representative of Kwara South, will assume the role of deputy chief whip.
The unveiling of these key positions comes following the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly on June 13, during which the presiding officers for both chambers were elected.
In his address, Akpabio emphasized that the majority’s principal officers were chosen through a process of “consensus,” highlighting the party’s commitment to unity and collaboration in advancing their legislative goals.
With regard to the minority leadership, Senate President Akpabio made an additional announcement. Senator Simon Mwadkwon, who represents Plateau North, was designated as the minority leader.
Akpabio expressed admiration for the minority caucus, consisting of approximately seven political parties, and unveiled the remaining members of their leadership team.
In his statement, Akpabio said, “Senator Simon Mwadkwon will serve as the minority leader, alongside Oyewumi Olalere, who will act as the deputy minority leader. Senator Darlington Nwokocha assumes the role of minority whip, and Senator Rufai Anga has been appointed as the deputy minority whip.”
The announcement of the principal officers for both the majority and minority parties marks a significant milestone in the operations of the 10th Senate.
