The Labour Party in Lagos State has issued a statement condemning the unchecked violence perpetrated against its candidates, members, and supporters by suspected members of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the state ahead of the Governorship and House of Assembly elections scheduled for Saturday.

The state Publicity Secretary, Olubunmi Odesanya, released the statement which detailed an attack on Hon. Olumide Oworu, a Labour Party candidate who is contesting against APC’s Desmond Elliot.

The statement reported that Oworu and his supporters were attacked and beaten up by thugs suspected to be members of the APC as they were about to kick off a campaign rally around Bode Thomas Street Junction in Surulere on Thursday. The statement expressed deep concern about the unchecked violence perpetuated against candidates, members, and supporters of the Labour Party in the days leading to the March 18 elections.

The statement called on Governor Babajide Sanwoolu to call his stalwarts to order and put a stop to the violence. The Labour Party accused the APC of sowing violence in heaps, and warned that the harvest of violence would spell doom for the ruling party. The party wondered how the governor could look the other way and be unperturbed by the mayhem caused day after day in the state.

The statement further noted that the APC, with all its thuggery, was handing over victory to the Labour Party candidate, Olumide. It suggested that the impending defeat unnerves the APC, which has seen the followership and popularity of the Labour Party in the last presidential election, making them afraid of all the LP’s candidates.

The Labour Party called on the Nigeria Police, all security agencies, human and civil rights organizations, international election observers, and monitoring teams to be on red alert to curb the excesses of the APC. The statement emphasized that the Labour Party remained focused on achieving an outstanding victory at the polls from top to bottom.
