The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council has criticized the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, for his inconsistent and opportunistic comments regarding the Naira Swap policy. This follows a statement from Phrank Shuaibu, a Special Assistant Public Communications to Atiku Abubakar, accusing certain APC governors of attempting to instigate civil disobedience by insisting that both the old and new Naira notes would remain legal tender in their states.
The APC PCC pointed out that Atiku had previously praised the Central Bank of Nigeria and asked it not to extend the deadline for the Naira Swap policy, but later called on the CBN to allow Nigerians to deposit their old N500 and N1000 notes in commercial banks after the policy caused widespread currency scarcity and misery for the population. The council warned Nigerians to be wary of Atiku, who they claim lacks strong conviction and strength of character to lead Nigeria.
The council also accused Atiku of being inconsistent and unreliable, stating that he had advanced several contradictory positions in an attempt to gain political advantage from the crisis. They alleged that Atiku and his party initially hailed the CBN policy when they thought it was designed to stop Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu from becoming the next elected president of Nigeria. However, Atiku’s position exploded in his face when the unintended consequences of the CBN policy manifested in its full ramifications and crippled the entire populace.
The council claimed that Atiku sought to claim credit by asking the CBN to slightly shift the deadline of the policy, but this position also proved anti-people as the 10 February deadline was grossly inadequate. They argued that Atiku’s latest position of asking the CBN to allow Nigerians to deposit their old N500 and N1000 notes in commercial banks was opportunistic and demonstrated his lack of principles.
The council urged Nigerians to avoid Atiku and to support a consistent and steady leader like Asiwaju Tinubu, who has demonstrated strong conviction and offered a six-point solution to get the country out of the current crisis.
