Al Ittihad has parted ways with their former manager, Nuno Espirito Santo, citing a series of disappointing results during his tenure as the reason for his dismissal. The Saudi champions made this announcement after a string of unsatisfactory performances in the Saudi Pro League, culminating in a 2-0 loss to Air Force Club of Iraq in the Asian Champions League on Monday.
Nuno had been facing mounting pressure due to the team’s struggles, and the club ultimately decided to relieve him of his duties. Nuno, who had previously enjoyed a successful stint as the manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers from 2017 to 2021, had taken the reins at Al Ittihad in July of the previous year.
While Nuno had guided Al Ittihad to a Saudi title in the prior season, there were reports of tension in his relationship with striker Karim Benzema, who had joined the club in June as part of the influx of foreign talent in the Pro League.
In an official statement shared on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Al Ittihad announced, “The club has terminated its contract with Portuguese coach Nuno Santo. This decision follows a comprehensive evaluation of the recent phase during which he was responsible for coaching the first football team.”
During the search for a permanent replacement for Nuno, assistant coach Hassan Khalifa will assume temporary managerial duties. It’s worth noting that Nuno’s tenure as the manager of Tottenham Hotspur, which began in the summer of 2021, was short-lived, lasting only four months before his departure.
