Wole Soyinka: Nigerians will continue to demand restructuring of the Nigerian federation

In an interview on Channels Television’s program “Roadmap 2023,” Nigerian Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka emphasized that Nigerians will not stop demanding the restructuring of the Nigerian federation. His comment comes ahead of the inauguration of the new administration on May 29.

Soyinka believes that the government of President-Elect Asiwaju Bola Tinubu must focus on the persistent calls for restructuring, or else their programs and policies will face serious challenges. He stressed that the people of the country will continue to demand a restructuring of the nation.

He noted that new voices have emerged, which are more powerful than before, and they are not merely whining voices but rather based on actualities. The country has failed in so many directions, and people are saying, “let us try in this direction,” which cannot be ignored.

Soyinka warned that if the government ignores these calls, their economic policies, infrastructure, and transformation will fail. The country will end up threading the same old spur, and there will be no progress.

Soyinka also pointed out that the just-concluded elections have broken a mold, and Nigerians must be optimistic about the future of their country. There have been several calls for restructuring of the Nigerian federation to bring the government closer to the people at the grassroots, which must be taken seriously by the new administration.
