The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi-Ojaja II, has called on President Bola Tinubu to leverage the influence and proximity of traditional rulers in combating the prevailing issue of insecurity in the country.
The monarch made this plea during a courtesy visit by the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN) to the president at the State House Conference Center in Abuja on Friday.
As the co-chair of the NCTRN, Ooni stressed the significance of traditional rulers’ involvement, emphasizing that President Tinubu should not underestimate their capabilities.
With their deep connection to the people, traditional rulers possess unique insights and resources that can contribute to addressing the security challenges faced by the nation.
Addressing President Tinubu directly, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi-Ojaja II stated, “There are areas we will like to work with you, one of which is security. It is time to use us more. We are not saying we are idle, but to make your work easier, use us.
“The foundation of this country today is the traditional rulers. We are here to pledge our loyalty and support. We want to work with you to ensure you leave a legacy.”
The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Abubakar Sa’ad, also present during the visit, emphasized that this customary meeting of the monarchs occurs whenever there is a change in the country’s leadership.
He acknowledged the significant challenges currently faced by the nation and expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s ability to address them effectively.
“We thank God for the smooth way the elections took place. Many negative people thought this country will collapse but we are still here,” he said.
“We are here for you, for our people, and our country. If you don’t reach out to us, we will reach out to you. We wish you the most successful tenure in good health.”
The event witnessed the presence of George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, as well as traditional rulers from the six geo-political zones of the country.
Their attendance highlighted the collective commitment of traditional rulers to collaborate with the government in fostering peace, security, and national development.
President Bola Tinubu expressed his gratitude for the support and assured the traditional rulers of his administration’s dedication to addressing the security challenges plaguing the nation. The president acknowledged the vital role that traditional rulers play in their communities and welcomed their partnership in tackling the issue of insecurity.
