Renowned Canadian rapper Daystar Peterson, widely recognized as Tory Lanez, has been handed a 10-year prison sentence in connection with the shooting incident involving fellow artist Megan Thee Stallion. The verdict was delivered by the court following Lanez’s conviction on three gun-related charges back in December 2022. The shooting transpired in 2020, during an intense argument between the two musicians after a post-party gathering.
Lanez, 31 years old, had inflicted gunshot wounds on Grammy award-winning artist Megan Thee Stallion, whose birth name is Megan Pete. The incident transpired following a disagreement between the two, which spiraled out of control after a party they both attended. The altercation culminated in Lanez firing shots at Megan Pete’s feet, necessitating surgical intervention to remove bullet fragments from her foot.
Subsequently, Lanez was found guilty of three felony charges, including assault with a semi-automatic weapon, possession of an unlicensed firearm in a vehicle, and recklessly discharging a firearm. He has been incarcerated since his conviction late last year.
The shooting incident took place during the aftermath of a pool party hosted by reality TV star Kylie Jenner. Prosecutors underscored the gravity of the situation, advocating for a 13-year prison term for Lanez. They argued that his actions targeted a “vulnerable victim” and unfolded in a tranquil residential neighborhood, coupled with subsequent attempts to degrade and traumatize the victim post-attack.
Responding to the verdict, George Gascón, the Los Angeles District Attorney, highlighted the impact of Megan Thee Stallion’s fame on raising awareness about violence against women. He remarked, “The fact that she is a successful entertainer has brought an important spotlight on the issue of violence against women.”
Lanez’s legal representation contended that he should receive probation and undergo treatment at a drug rehabilitation facility. The matter of Lanez’s potential deportation to Canada remains uncertain.
During the proceedings, more than 70 letters were submitted in support of Lanez from his acquaintances, including rapper Iggy Azalea, who advocated for a sentence that aims at transformation rather than life-ruin. The judge acknowledged these pleas while evaluating the case.
The incident unfolded in the early hours of July 12, 2020, when both Megan Thee Stallion and Tory Lanez, accompanied by his bodyguard and Megan’s friend and assistant Kelsey Harris, departed Kylie Jenner’s residence in an SUV. During the trial, Megan Pete testified that a dispute ignited over their prior romantic involvement, escalating into a heated exchange of insults related to their respective careers.
Tory Lanez, a prominent figure in the music industry with seven US Top 10 albums over the past seven years, now faces a substantial prison term that marks a significant turn in his career and personal life. The case serves as a high-profile reminder of the consequences of violence against women and the challenges celebrities face in addressing legal repercussions for their actions.
