Todd Phillip’s dark supervillain origin story Joker has won the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival.

It is not often that a major Hollywood Studio takes home the coveted prize at Venice but the Warner Bros. production established itself early on as a leading contender.

Director, Todd Phillips and actor Joaquin Phoenix

The movie, which stars Joaquin Phoenix, has been praised by critics and the award win has proven that it is indeed a unique achievement, especially for a movie that focuses on an antagonist.

Phoenix reportedly lost a lot of weight to play the lead role of failed comedian Arthur Fleck, whose downward spiral into madness leads him to eventually become one of DC’s most famous supervillains.

Joker was directed by Todd Phillips with a budget of $55 million.

A graduate of Theatre Arts who is also a scriptwriter, editor, director, and movie critic.
