President Bola Tinubu has applauded President Macky Sall of Senegal for his decision not to seek a third term in office.
There had been protests in Senegal in the past few weeks following speculations about a third-term ambition of President Sall, who is moving towards the end of his second term in office.
Sall, who assumed office in 2012 after defeating former President Abdoulaye Wade, is currently in his second term, which began in 2019 and will conclude in 2024. The presidential tenure in Senegal lasts five years.
Addressing the rumor of his third-term ambition, President Sall on Monday told the people of Senegal, that he would not run for the presidency in the February 25, 2024, presidential election in his country.
Reacting to the development, In a statement released on Friday by his spokesperson, Dele Alake, Tinubu hailed Sall’s announcement, highlighting his commitment to the welfare and economic prosperity of Senegal.
The Nigerian president described the decision as a display of ingenuity and true altruism, emphasizing that it would bolster democracy across the continent.
Tinubu stated, “The decision of President Macky Sall that he will abide by the constitutional term of office and not offer himself for a third term in Senegal is heart-warming. It has brought great joy and relief. As a Democrat, I must commend my brother for his statesmanship.”
