Senate Promises To Resolve NLC Demands Within Seven Days In a show of solidarity and determination, members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) took to the streets on Wednesday, staging a protest at the National Assembly complex in Abuja.

The demonstrators, led by NLC National Chairman Joe Ajaero and Festus Osifo of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), voiced their grievances against the recent removal of subsidy on petrol, which has inflicted hardships on Nigerians across the nation.

Marching from the Unity Fountain near Transcorp Hilton, the agitated workers reached the National Assembly complex, where they temporarily halted the screening of ministerial nominees. The protesters carried placards bearing poignant inscriptions, highlighting the worsening poverty rate in the country, and passionately chanting solidarity songs, demanding immediate government action.

Addressing the demonstrators, Senator Ali Ndume from Borno South appealed for understanding, promising to take swift action to address their concerns. He humbly requested one week to work on resolving the demands, urging the protesters to remain patient during this period.

“I am begging you to give us one week and we will resolve it and if you’re not satisfied with the progress we are making then you can take further action. Fellow comrades, we have a motion on the ground, the Senate is going to be involved, please give us one week and we will resolve it,” Senator Ndume stated firmly, attempting to assure the workers of the Senate’s commitment to their plight.

In a show of unity and empathy, Senator Ireti Kingibe representing FCT (Federal Capital Territory) stood in support of the protesters, pledging to do the needful to ensure their demands are met. With conviction, she expressed her honesty, promising to keep the workers informed of progress during the negotiation process.

“You can trust me, if this is not working, I will call your leadership and tell them that this is how it is. I do not lie. You will not regret electing me,” Senator Kingibe declared, affirming her dedication to representing the interests of the Nigerian people.

Among the senators present at the scene were Tony Nwoye, the senator representing Anambra North, and Asuquo Ekpenyong representing Cross River Central, showing a united front in their commitment to addressing the concerns raised by the protesting workers.
