Grantham plead guilty to second-degree murder, and he was already aware of the punishment, but his jail sentence is unknown. He’ll have to wait until he’s up for parole before he can know how long he has to wait in jail.

Four days after shooting his mother in the back of the head, he turned himself in to police. The Leo Awards nominated Grantham for his turn as Erik in 2020.

When a person is convicted of second-degree murder, they are sentenced with no parole eligibility between 10 and 25 years. In the hearing earlier this year, prosecutors recommended 18 years. Grantham’s lawyer agreed to 12. Justice Ker met both of their suggestions in her ruling this week.

Grantham has been in this facility for the past two and a half years. In the interim, he has participated in a mental health program and is being readied for transfer to a permanent facility.

Grantham had a pivotal role on the CW show Riverdale, where he played the character Jeffrey Augustine. The character was responsible for killing Luke Perry’s Fred Andrews in a hit and run on the show.

After the murder of his mother, Grantham took video of the body and confessed to the killing on-camera. Thereafter, he tried to kill Canadian PM Justin Trudeau and go on a mass shooting spree.

Luckily, he went to the police station the next day and confessed. He is reported to have said “I killed my mother.”

The actor expressed how sorry he was in what he had done. “In the face of something so horrible, saying sorry seems so pointless,” said Grantham as he read from paper.
