President Tinubu to Determine New Dates for National Census, Says NPC Chairman
NPC Chairman Briefs President Tinubu on Census, New Dates to be Determined

The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Nasir Kwarra, announced today that President Bola Tinubu will provide directives regarding the rescheduling of the national population and housing census. Kwarra made this disclosure while speaking to State House Correspondents after a delegation from the NPC briefed President Tinubu at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa on Thursday. The census, initially planned for May 3rd to May 5th, was postponed in April, prompting the need for new dates to be established.

During the briefing, the NPC presented its report to President Tinubu, who is expected to carefully review and finalize the necessary arrangements that will inform the decision on the revised date for the nationwide exercise.

According to Kwarra, the Chairman of the NPC, the Commission will request additional financial provisions due to the prolonged delay of the census. He emphasized that as time passes, the financial requirements of the exercise expand, making it imperative to secure adequate funding.

“We provided President Tinubu with a comprehensive update on our level of preparedness and the anticipated outcomes of the census. I am pleased to inform you that Mr. President has graciously approved his support for the Commission in conducting the census and our preparatory activities. Although we are not at a standstill, his encouragement has given us the confidence and motivation to enhance our preparations,” stated Kwarra.

He further added, “We will continue with our preparations and eagerly await the President’s decision on the census date. We have submitted our proposal to him for his consideration, and he will study it before responding to us.”

Kwarra expressed his gratitude to President Tinubu for recognizing the significance of accurate data for national planning and development. He acknowledged the President’s understanding of the crucial role that the census plays in shaping policies and strategies that contribute to the country’s growth.

The NPC Chairman assured the public that the commission is committed to executing a successful census once the new dates are determined. The upcoming exercise is expected to provide vital demographic information, allowing policymakers to make informed decisions and allocate resources effectively.

As Nigerians await President Tinubu’s directives, the NPC remains focused on intensifying its preparations to ensure a smooth and reliable population and housing census.
