Compliance Drive: LAWMA Targets Homes Without Waste Bins in Lagos

In a bid to tackle the growing waste management challenges in Lagos State, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has announced its plans to seal homes without waste bins on Lagos Island and the Mainland, starting from July 7, 2023.

This decisive action comes after a two-month period of abatement warnings, during which the LAWMA advised property owners and residents in these neighborhoods to acquire suitable waste bins for their houses.

Kunle Adebiyi, the Executive Director of Finance at LAWMA, emphasized the importance of adhering to waste management regulations in order to establish a cleaner and more liveable environment. Adebiyi stated, “By taking action against violations and ensuring compliance, we can create a sustainable environment and help build the city of our dreams.”

LAWMA’s Enforcement Team will target areas on both Lagos Island and the Mainland where consistent violations of waste management guidelines have been observed. The team will conduct thorough inspections to identify individuals, households, or businesses that have neglected waste management responsibilities.

Those found in violation will receive an “intention to seal” notice, which will outline specific actions required to rectify the situation and avoid further penalties. This sealing exercise will be implemented in phases, with the current phase marking the beginning of the initiative. LAWMA intends to expand the operation to other areas in the state to ensure full compliance.

In an appeal to citizens, the executive director stressed the importance of taking responsibility for preserving a clean and healthy environment for all. Adebiyi urged residents to contribute to the general cleanliness and sustainability of the environment by complying with waste management regulations.

He further explained, “By adhering to the government’s directive to procure standard covered bins, we can ensure that our wastes are properly containerized. This will help save the environment from indiscriminate waste disposal and mitigate hazardous consequences such as flooding and the outbreak of diseases.”

LAWMA’s initiative to seal homes without waste bins demonstrates its commitment to addressing the waste management crisis in Lagos State. With a strong focus on enforcement and compliance, the authority aims to create a more sustainable and environmentally friendly city for its residents.
