President Muhammadu Buhari, with less than 24 hours remaining in his tenure, has signed into law two significant bills: the establishment of the Almajiri National Commission and the Federal Road Safety Commission Training Institute. This development aims to address the pressing issues of illiteracy, skill acquisition, and road safety management in Nigeria.
According to a statement released on Sunday, Senator Babajide Omoworare confirmed the president’s assent to the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Education Bill, which had previously been passed by the National Assembly. The legislation seeks to implement a multimodal system of education, combat illiteracy, foster skill acquisition and entrepreneurship programs, and alleviate youth poverty, delinquency, and destitution in the country.
Additionally, President Buhari also signed the Federal Road Safety Commission Training Institutions (Establishment) Bill. This new law aims to enhance capacity building and training in road traffic administration and safety management. Furthermore, it mandates the provision of comprehensive training for members of the Federal Road Safety Corps, ensuring their competence in ensuring road safety across the nation.
In a bid to safeguard the future of National Assembly workers, the president also assented to the National Assembly Service Pensions Board bill. This legislation exempts employees of the National Assembly and others from mandatory contributory pension schemes, thus ensuring that their pensions are adequately catered for.
The signing of these bills underscores President Buhari’s commitment to addressing crucial challenges in Nigeria. With the establishment of the Almajiri National Commission, the government aims to uplift out-of-school children and provide them with accessible educational opportunities. Simultaneously, the creation of the Federal Road Safety Commission Training Institute emphasizes the president’s dedication to improving road safety measures and ensuring the competence of road traffic administrators.
As President Muhammadu Buhari concludes his tenure, these legislative efforts represent significant strides in tackling pressing issues and advancing the welfare of Nigerians.
