Updated Regulations: Nigeria Customs Permits Export of Processed Wood and Charcoal

The Nigeria Customs Service has officially announced the lifting of the administrative ban on the export of processed wood, charcoal, and other related products, according to a circular dated June 8, 2023. The circular, signed by Assistant Comptroller General of Customs, Musa MBA, on behalf of the Comptroller General, highlights the conditions and restrictions accompanying the lifting of the ban.

The circular, referenced as T&T/2023/CIRCULAR NO.8, contains information from the Federal Ministry of Finance’s letter with reference number F.17545/T/9, dated June 5, 2023. The letter states that the administrative ban on the export of processed wood, charcoal, and allied products is hereby lifted, effective immediately.

However, the export of threatened plants categorized as endangered species (CITES listed), including Rosewood (Pterocarpus erinaremainremains, will continue to be prohibited.

To export processed wood, charcoal, and other related products, interested parties must obtain a letter of approval from the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning. This requirement ensures compliance with the new regulations and demonstrates a commitment to responsible and sustainable trade practices.

In addition to adhering to the existing guidelines for non-oil exports, all exporters are directed to collaborate closely with Forest Officers stationed at ports and borders. This collaboration aims to facilitate the accurate identification and prevention of prohibited wood products from being exported.

The conditional lifting of the ban reflects the government’s commitment to balancing economic growth and environmental conservation. By allowing the export of processed wood and charcoal under specific conditions, the Nigeria Customs Service aims to promote responsible and sustainable trade practices in the country.

Exporters and relevant stakeholders are urged to familiarize themselves with the updated regulations and ensure strict compliance to avoid any penalties or complications during the exportation process.

For further information or clarification on the new regulations, interested parties can contact the Nigeria Customs Service or the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning.
