The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert, notifying Nigerians about the sale of unwholesome Mayonnaise branded as “Whippy Real Mayonnaise” in the country.
The alert was issued by the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, in response to a consumer complaint received and investigated by the post-marketing surveillance unit of the agency in Ilorin, Kwara State.
Prof Adeyeye disclosed that the unwholesome Mayonnaise products were sourced locally from SNF FOODS Limited, a manufacturer based in Onitsha, Anambra State. Random samples from different batches of the product were taken for laboratory analysis at NAFDAC Labs, which showed unsatisfactory outcomes.
Despite the products still being within their shelf life, they were found to have become rancid and displayed a different color from the original Mayonnaise. The affected Whippy Real Mayonnaise is available in plastic bottles with pack sizes of 245g and 460g.
The manufacturing date of the implicated batches is listed as June 2022, with a “Best Before” date of December 2023. The specific batch numbers are OA2GP220614A (Pack size 245g), OA2GP220611A, and OA2GP220617A (Pack size 460g). The NAFDAC Registration Number for the product is A8-0700.
In response to the discovery, Prof Adeyeye has directed all zonal directors of NAFDAC and state coordinators to carry out surveillance and recall the implicated batches of the unwholesome Whippy Real Mayonnaise from the market.
She urged distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise caution and vigilance to avoid consumption, sale, or distribution of the affected batches. It is essential for consumers to carefully check the authenticity and physical condition of the product.
Any individual in possession of the implicated batches of Whippy Real Mayonnaise is advised to submit their stock to the nearest NAFDAC office immediately. Additionally, if anyone has consumed this product and experienced any adverse reaction or health event, it is recommended to seek immediate medical advice from a qualified healthcare professional.
Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicions regarding the distribution and sale of unwholesome packaged food products to the nearest NAFDAC office, or they can contact NAFDAC via phone at 0800-162-3322 or through email at sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.
Furthermore, consumers are encouraged to report any adverse events or side effects related to the consumption of unwholesome packaged food products to the nearest NAFDAC office. Reports can also be submitted through the E-reporting platforms available on the NAFDAC website.
The safety and well-being of Nigerian consumers remain a top priority for NAFDAC, and the agency is taking swift and decisive action to ensure that the implicated batches of Whippy Real Mayonnaise are removed from circulation to prevent any potential health risks.
