Is Hip Hop Still Selling In Nigeria?

I want to believe we’re yet to have enough of the MI Abaga‘s wake up call on Nigerian rappers not keeping it real. Rappers are going commercial in Nigeria and the reason isn’t far-fetched as it all boils down to the matter of dough! In this episode of Hip Hop in 5 Mins, Gida Hills gets in a crucial conversation with Olaolu9ja who is also a hip-hop head and a devoted follower of the ministry.

Olaolu9ja isn’t subscribing to the talk that Hip-hop isn’t selling in Nigeria. As far as he is concerned, paying bills with music shouldn’t be a problem if you can manage yourself as an artist. Taking his shots directly at Vector who at a time gave the excuse of the need to make money for switching to commercial. Olaolu9ja tags VEC as washing his dirty linen in the public, saying that shouldn’t be enough reason to compromise on the genre. He wants to believe MI, Modenine had to pay bills as rappers as well.

The likes of Sarkodie, Nasty C, Cassper Nyovest, who are not Nigerian rappers but getting a lot of features on Nigerian songs is a typical hint that market isn’t the problem but the content as highlights by Gida.
