The senate president made the comments in response to a personal explanation given by Senator Istifanus Gyang representing Plateau North on Wednesday, who drew attention to recent attacks by bandits in some communities in Plateau State.

Gyang lamented that the bandits had become so emboldened that they give notices before attacking their targets. Lawan, however, blamed the worsening security situation on the lack of resources available to the security agencies.

“Let me remark here that the security agencies should ensure that we maintain security in areas that appear to be flashpoints,” the Senate President said.

“I agree with you recently that the security situation in some parts of the country has started to deteriorate. But I think the military has done a very good job in improving security across the country and we commend them for doing so much with insufficient resources.”

Lawan emphasized that the focus should always be on providing security and improving the welfare of Nigerian citizens. He also commended Gyang for bringing the issue to the attention of the Senate.

Following the discussion, the Senate observed a one-minute silence in honor of all those that were killed in the attacks. The Senate President’s remarks come amid growing concern over the security situation in Nigeria, with banditry, kidnapping, and other criminal activities on the rise in several parts of the country.
