In response to the prevailing security situation, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of [State Name] has taken a significant step to ease the 24-hour curfew earlier imposed on the state. The curfew will now be in effect from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., marking a relaxation of 12 hours. This decision was conveyed in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Humwashi Wonosikou, on Monday.
The Governor’s decision to modify the curfew came after a series of high-level meetings with security chiefs in the state. It was aimed at finding a balanced approach to tackle the challenges posed by recent unrest while ensuring that citizens could resume their daily activities without undue hardship.
During the announcement, Governor Fintiri, represented by his Deputy, Kaletapwa Farauta, called on parents to send their children back to school. He also encouraged businesses to reopen, assuring them of the government’s commitment to maintaining public peace and safeguarding their interests.
Governor Fintiri expressed concern about the activities of miscreants and their attempts to disrupt public peace. He issued a stern warning to hoodlums, as well as the general public, to strictly adhere to the curfew regulations. Security personnel have been instructed to approach and question individuals in a courteous and cooperative manner.
The decision to impose the 24-hour curfew was taken promptly in response to widespread looting and attacks on citizens, allegedly orchestrated by hoodlums. The state government attributed the unrest to hunger and the soaring cost of foodstuff, triggered by recent fuel price increases.
Reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) indicate that government-owned and private food storages and warehouses were ransacked, with hoodlums taking away anything they could find in an outburst of anger.
The situation escalated dangerously in Yola, where protesters resorted to violence, brandishing machetes and breaking into business premises and homes to steal goods and property.
Governor Fintiri emphasized that the curfew strictly prohibited all movement throughout the state. Exceptions were only made for individuals on essential duties who possess valid identification. He urged law-abiding residents to comply with the directive, emphasizing that anyone found contravening the curfew order would be promptly arrested and prosecuted.
The government’s decision to relax the curfew comes as a cautious step towards restoring normalcy in the state while ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens. Public cooperation and adherence to the curfew regulations are seen as essential elements in achieving this objective.
It remains to be seen how the situation will unfold as the state continues to grapple with the aftermath of the unrest and the efforts made by the government to bring lasting peace and stability.
