The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, has taken a decisive step to protect public infrastructure by announcing a comprehensive ban on metal scavenging throughout the state.
The governor made this announcement during his visit to the Bulumkutu area of Maiduguri on Monday, where he witnessed the extent of damage caused by metal scavengers to government structures.
Governor Zulum emphasized that immediate action was necessary and declared that an Executive Order would be issued to enforce the ban effectively.
During his visit, Governor Zulum expressed his dismay at the sight of vandalized metals, which included street lights and communication towers, stating that such acts posed a threat to the activities of both the state and federal governments. He firmly condemned these actions and stressed the need to put an end to metal scavenging in Borno State until further notice.
“I will sign an Executive Order banning all forms of metal scavenging in Borno,” Governor Zulum announced, underscoring his commitment to protecting government properties and preserving critical infrastructure within the state.
Furthermore, the governor acknowledged the grave risks faced by metal scavengers, many of whom have lost their lives while attempting to vandalize items from abandoned communities. This practice has not only resulted in the loss of human lives but has also contributed to the deterioration of public facilities.
In a recent incident on July 7, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps apprehended six suspects involved in the vandalization of the NITEL communication mast located in Chiki village, Chibok Local Government Area.
Governor Zulum’s ban on metal scavenging demonstrates his unwavering commitment to ensuring the security and preservation of public infrastructure.
The ban will not only deter potential scavengers but also serve as a deterrent to those who engage in the illegal trade of stolen metals.
