The Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, has requested an extension of his medical leave by writing to the state’s House of Assembly.
Akeredolu, who commenced his one-month medical leave on June 5th, remains under medical treatment abroad. The state government had previously announced that he would not resume his duties until receiving clearance from his doctors.
During the governor’s absence, the lawmakers named his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, as the acting governor. However, on Monday, Speaker Olamide Oladiji revealed that Governor Akeredolu had submitted a letter to the assembly, seeking an extension of his leave.
In a statement, Speaker Oladiji stated, “Following the doctor’s advice on the need to take adequate rest after recuperating, Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu SAN, CON, has forwarded the letter of extension on medical leave to the Ondo State House of Assembly.” He received the letter on behalf of the other lawmakers.
The Speaker emphasized that Governor Akeredolu’s decision aligns with Section 190 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended). According to the letter, Deputy Governor Aiyedatiwa will continue to act as the governor until a written declaration stating otherwise is presented.
Speaker Oladiji expressed optimism that Governor Akeredolu would soon be able to resume his official duties.
