Fuel Scarcity Looms As NUPENG Threatens Strike Action

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) have threatened to go on strike in the next seven days if Chevron contractors and the company do not comply with their demands.

The Unions in the Oil and Gas Industry had reached an agreement with Chevron Nigeria Limited on June 20 that 30 per cent of the Labour Manpower Contract Workers would be relieved as against the 70 per cent proposed by the company.

Also part of the agreement was the exclusion of the NUPENG and PENGASSAN executives from the reduction.

Apparently, Chevron has violated the terms of agreement and in the words of Prince Williams Akporeha, President and General Secretary of NUPENG, ‘We further learned that the intention of Chevron is to change the contract to short term service contract and we see this as a breach of agreement reached with us in bad faith’.
