A devastating multiple auto crash unfolded today on the bustling Eko Bridge in Lagos, resulting in the tragic loss of two lives and leaving five individuals injured. The incident, which involved a harrowing collision between six vehicles, including a fully loaded truck, sent shockwaves through the city’s transportation network.
The ill-fated vehicles caught in the chaos were identified as a Lexus Jeep with license plate number LSP 795 EW, a Toyota Camry marked KD 606 HH, another Toyota vehicle bearing the registration ND 217 GX, and two mini buses displaying plate numbers FKJ 77 YG and LSR 952 HZ.
Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), officially confirmed the grim occurrence. Taofiq revealed, “Operatives of LASTMA, in collaboration with other emergency responders, swiftly initiated an urgent operation at the site of a catastrophic accident on Eko Bridge, heading towards the Alaka area of Lagos.”
The head of LASTMA’s ‘Zebra’ Zone 3, Iponri, Akinde Olusola, spearheaded the valiant rescue mission. Olusola solemnly conveyed that the incident resulted in the tragic demise of two individuals – one male and one female – while inflicting serious injuries upon five others.
Preliminary findings from the investigation indicate that the cataclysmic event was triggered by a fully loaded ‘MAC’ truck hurtling at high speed. The truck’s brakes reportedly failed, leading to a heart-stopping collision with five private vehicles, including a commercial mini bus commonly known as a ‘Korope’.
Olusola further disclosed that the survivors and the two unfortunate fatalities were promptly transported to a nearby General Hospital. The swift medical response was facilitated by an ambulance owned by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Response Unit.
Among the array of emergency responders who swiftly converged at the accident site were the LASEMA Response Unit, personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and dedicated police officers from the Iponri Divisional Police Station.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety measures and the pressing need for comprehensive traffic management strategies in the bustling city of Lagos.
