Crayon Reveals Leaving UNILAG for Music Career: A Sacrifice for Passion
Rising Star Crayon Chooses Music over University Education

Nigerian musical artist, Crayon, has opened up about his decision to leave the University of Lagos (UNILAG) after multiple unsuccessful attempts at the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in order to pursue a career in music. The revelation was made during a chat with HipTV.

Crayon, who is signed to the renowned Mavin Records label, shared that the demanding nature of both music and academics led him to choose between the two. He expressed his inability to balance the stress of pursuing a university education and building a music career simultaneously.

The talented singer recounted a conversation he had with his parents regarding his passion for music. He revealed that his father, understanding his aspirations, encouraged him to attempt the UTME for the fifth time before making a final decision. It was during this period that Crayon met a music producer and friend named Baby Fresh, who played a significant role in inspiring him to make a pivotal sacrifice for his musical journey.

Crayon stated, “I realized I couldn’t juggle school and music at the same time because it’s quite stressful in Nigeria.” He further explained that he had a heartfelt conversation with his parents, expressing his desire to pursue music wholeheartedly. In response, his father advised him to give the UTME one final attempt, assuring him that if it didn’t work out, he could fully commit to his music career.

Recalling the crucial moment, Crayon admitted that he had to seek support from a friend named Julius. He confided in him about the drastic step he was about to take. Julius responded with encouragement, saying, “You just told God you’re serious.” Crayon then proceeded to deceive his parents by informing them that he had written the UTME, but his name did not appear on the admission list.

The artist revealed that he walked out of the UNILAG post-UTME examination, leaving onlookers astonished and questioning his decision. He recounted the bewildered expressions directed at him, with people wondering why he would abandon his pursuit after waiting for so long.

Crayon, whose real name is not disclosed, hails from Orile Iganmu, a vibrant community in the Surulere area of Lagos State. After signing with Blowtime Entertainment, a subsidiary of Mavin Records in May 2019, his music career gained momentum. In July 2019, he released his self-titled EP, ‘Cray Cray,’ followed by ‘Twelve AM’ in 2021.

As Crayon continues to make waves in the Nigerian music industry, his decision to leave university to pursue his passion serves as a testament to his dedication and determination to achieve his dreams.
