In a significant development, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court has ruled against the arrest and detention of Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The presiding judge, Bello Kawu, issued the order on Friday in response to an application filed by Emefiele himself.
The series of events leading up to this ruling began on June 9 when President Bola Tinubu suspended Emefiele and instructed him to transfer his responsibilities to Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, the deputy governor of the operations directorate.
Subsequently, on the following day, the Department of State Services (DSS) publicly announced that Emefiele was in their custody for “investigative reasons.”
Since early June, Emefiele has remained in the custody of the DSS, with the agency maintaining that it possessed a valid court order to detain him. However, on Thursday, a court ordered the DSS to either charge the suspended CBN governor or release him on bail.
Reacting, DSS, revealed that they had charged Emefiele before an FCT high court as a result of a ruling.
The turn of events prompted Emefiele to seek legal recourse, leading him to approach the FCT High Court in Apo. The court, presided over by Bello Kawu, granted Emefiele’s application, effectively nullifying his arrest and detention.
