According to a recent update by the Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Folasade Adefisayo, Chrisland High School in Ikeja, Lagos has been placed on probation by the Lagos State Government for one academic session. This move is aimed at monitoring the school’s adherence to safety policies and guidelines.
The decision was made after a meeting between the management of Chrisland Schools and government agencies that form the Lagos State Joint Task Force, which is responsible for implementing child protection and safeguarding policies. Representatives from the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Lagos State Safety Commission, Office of Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, and other members of the Joint Task Force were present at the meeting.
During the meeting, the Joint Task Force directed Chrisland Schools to outline leadership functions and strengthen risk and safety management in all schools under its jurisdiction. The Lagos State Ministry of Education also directed the management of Chrisland Schools to urgently implement short and long-term reforms in school governance.
The school management has been asked to recruit a certified Risk Manager to conduct and render a detailed analysis of the risk management of the group of schools. Additionally, the management has been directed to ensure that all students, staff, and stakeholders of the school who were affected by the death of Whitney Adeniran, a 12-year-old pupil who died during the school’s inter-house sports on February 9 at the Agege stadium, are given psycho-social therapy and trauma counselling.
Adefisayo emphasized that the stipulated conditions are the outcome of official investigations and reviews by all the agencies that form the Task Force. She added that these conditions are standard procedure for reopening schools that have been closed for any form of infraction in Lagos State.
Ibironke Adeyemi, the Managing Director of Chrisland Schools, who led the school management to the meeting, promised to fulfil all the requirements as directed by the Ministry. The school will now be under close monitoring for the next academic session to ensure that safety policies and guidelines are strictly adhered to.
